Our favourite Sunflower facts

Here are a couple of our fun and favourite sunflower facts - who knew a flower could have so much history?!

  • According the Greek mythology, Sunflowers symbolise loyalty and adoration – making them a really meaningful flower choice for summer weddings.
  • They are not always yellow! Although the classic colour associated with sunflowers in yellow, they can come in over 60 varieties and colours including ‘strawberry blonde’ soft orange, ring of fire ‘Moulin Rouge’ red, ‘Italian White’ creamy white, ‘Evening Sun’ for golden crimson.
  • Young sunflower heads track the sun during the day – moving east to west to follow the rays which helps them grow. However as the sunflower matures and the petals get sturdier, they just face east.
  • In 2014 Guinness World Record for the tallest sunflower was set at just over 30 feet – so tall in fact that the local fire brigade had to help measure it!
  • Sunflowers are actually made up of thousands of tiny flowers; there are the ray florets which are the big yellow petals, and then tiny florets make the centre part.
  • Sunflowers have been around for thousands of years and are native to North America. Sunflower seeds and oil have been used for many moons for health benefits and cooking.
